1 Wish list for the DER Laptops!! on Wed Sep 02, 2009 4:06 pm

I can't wait for my Yr 9's to get their laptops and start making movies on Premier Elements 4 -- I just wish that the DER had included Celtx (http://celtx.com/) on the laptops -- they seem to have catered for other subject much better than Drama.
The DER fellow said if lots of us email we could get it put on !!
The music programms are great -- already scored an entire song on MuseScore -- apparently the latest update has fixed the problems with instability -- just hope the DER is on the ball enough to update.
Also would like Hot Potatoes http://hotpot.uvic.ca/ and Eclipse software http://www.eclipsecrossword.com/ for making crosswords and interactive ones at that.
Would also prefer Firefox to Explorer.

I agree with you about the Firefox System instead of Internet Explorer.

Yep. 9 in 10 people at school prefer Mozilla Firefox over Internet Explorer. Mozilla Firefox has a better web standards support than Internet Explorer, and supports the near-completed HTML 5. I would hate to surf the internet with IE if things don't work.

Not according to the logs of sites I am involved with. Firefox is on the rise but it is certainly not used by 90% of visitors..

The main problems with firefox in terms of the Der netbooks is:
- Firefox release a lot of upgrades that require admin rights to install.
- Proxy settings can not easily be set by group policies the way that IE does - therefore users would have to change proxy or pac file settings manually between home and school.

But I think you miss the point - all the reasons you list are why we want to install it Smile Plus it is a much better browser than IE -with all it's stupid nuances.! Mind you I quite like Chrome at the moment...

I would like the panaboard software to be available - we didn't buy promethean boards because they were not on procurement and the smart boards were not a viable option for us so, through procurement, we bought panaboards only to discover our "little laptops" will not allow us to run the panaboard software! Yes, I know I can use the smart software etc but wouldn't it make sense that if the DET are making us buy particular items, then they would also allow us to use the 'matching' software?

Me too! It is much more secure according to many sources. So why are we stuck with Explorer?
What happened to the quick start browser we were promised without booting windows? Would giving us that have opened the doors to Open Source software? Waiting for the five minutes or so login time at the start of each lesson is an educational black hole. Who is responsible for that one?

8 Windows Movie Maker 2.6 on Sun Jun 06, 2010 2:20 pm

It would be nice to have Windows Movie Maker back on Windows 7 -- it is a simple alternative to Elements when elements won't play.

Microsoft do not include Movie Maker as part of Windows 7.
Its replacement is available as MS Live Movie Maker, requiring membership to Windows live before it can be downloaded.
